HONORARY DOCTORAL DEGREES

LOWELL THOMAS

DOCTOR OF LAWS

Presented by Richard L. Evans

I have the honor to present Lowell Thomas, ex-
plorer, observer of the great events of this century, visitor
to strange places of the earth, who has shared his adven-
tures and knowledge with millions through newspapers,
motion pictures, radio and television and forty-eight books.

Born in Ohio, April 6, 1892, the son of a school-
teacher mother and physician father, he was reared in
the mining towns of Colorado where as a youth he edited
two mining camp newspapers. Lowell Thomas early ac-
quired curiosity, a scholarly turn of mind, and, at the
insistence of his father, a clear voice trained in proper
diction and enunciation. This voice, speaking night after
night on radio for thirty-four years, describing events in
newsreels, providing commentary on television and Cine-
rama, has been certainly one of the most widely heard
voices in history. His total audience is estimated in the
billions.

He obtained the bachelors and master's degrees at
University of Northern Indiana, and taught in Chicago
Kent College of Law, but World War I cut short his
academic career while he was teaching English at Princeton.

As a war correspondent he ranged from the North
Sea to the Persian Gulf. In Arabia he discovered T. E.
Lawrence, the British archaeologist turned Bedouin to
lead the tribesmen of the sands in raids against the
Turks. Lowell Thomas joined him, and when the war
ended he alone had the story and the motion pictures of
the exploits of Lawrence of Arabia. The spectacular show,
with motion pictures, his voice, and music drew the de-
served acclaim of England and America.

At the end of World War I he ventured into belea-
guered Germany and was among the first to bring back an
eyewitness account of the German Revolution, the down-
fall of the Kaiser, and the inside story of Count Luck-
ner, the sea raider.

Wherever there is adventure, there also is Lowell

Thomas. And where there is none, he creates it. He has
taken expeditions into the wilds of Malaya and Burma,
the remote parts of India, the wild Khyber Pass country
and into the fierce and troubled land of the Afghans,
bringing to the world motion pictures of many far places.
He has filmed the pigmy tribes of Southeast Asia, the
aborigines of Australia, the vastness of the interior of
Alaska, the Andes, crossed the Himalayas into the strange
city of Lhasa, the Interior of Russia and New Guinea. He
was historian of the first air voyage around the world
made by four U.S. Army planes in 1924.

World War II found him broadcasting from London,
Paris, Luxembourg, Rome, from mobile trucks behind the
front lines, Berlin, and the Pacific Islands to report the
global action. After the war he was off again with one
of the greatest of all North polar airmen, Bernt Balchen,
to the Juneau Icecap, and in 1962 he went to the South
Pole with the U.S. Navy.

He produced three Cinerama films, one of them
featuring the world renowned Salt Lake Mormon Tab-
ernacle Choir. This year he narrated one of the films
for the pavilion of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-
day Saints for the New York World's Fair. For three
years, 1957 to 1959, his television series "High Adventure"
ran on the CBS-TV network.

Mr. President, in recognition of his lifetime of adven-
ture, sportsmanship and exploration, his contribution to the
knowledge of world events, peoples and geography; his
developments in the field of motion pictures and televis-
ion, his enlightenment of this nation to its own position
in the international scene, and for his integrity and
graciousness and personal qualities of character — for him-
self and what we have found him to be within himself —
I have the honor to recommend that Lowell Thomas be
awarded by Brigham Young University the degree of
Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.

ROBERT H. HINCKLEY

DOCTOR OF LAWS

Presented by Harvey L. Taylor

I have the honor to present Robert H. Hinckley, dis-
tinguished businessman, capable administrator in our na-
tional government, dedicated alumnus of Brigham Young
University, and faithful member of the Church.

Mr. Hinckley was born in Fillmore, Utah, on June 8,
1891, son of Edwin Smith and Adeline Hinckley. He mar-
ried Abrelia Seeley of Mt. Pleasant, Utah, on June 23, 1915.
They are the parents of four children : Robert Jr., Salt Lake
City; Mrs. Preston P. Nibley, Scarsdale, New York; John
S., Ogden; and Paul R., Canoga Park, California. They
have ten grandchildren.

Mr. Hinckley truly is a product of the Church educa-
tional system, for he attended school only at Brigham
Young Laboratory School and University, starting in kin-
dergarten with Ida Smoot Dusenberry as his teacher. As
he progressed through elementary and secondary schools,
he also was guided by such master teachers as Jennie Brim-
hall Knight, Susie Talmadge, Hermese Peterson, Ed Smart,
and William Henry Boyle. After completing a mission in
Germany from 1910 to 1913, he entered Brigham Young
University, studying under such teachers as John C. Swen-
son, Christen Jensen, Alfred Osmond, and Edwin Smith
Hinckley. He graduated from the University in 1916.

Indicative of his accomplishments in business are the
following positions which he has held: Director of Robert
H. Hinckley, Inc., Ogden and Salt Lake City; director of
First Security Corporation and of American Paper and
Supply Company, Salt Lake City; vice-president and assist-
ant to president of the Sperry Corporation; vice-president
and director of American Broadcasting Company, of which
he was one of the founders; member of Board of Directors
and member of Executive Committee of American Broad-
casting-Paramount Theatres, Inc.; trustee, Edward John
Noble Foundation; member, Board of Directors, vice-
president and president of Welsh Pony Society of America,
Inc.; and member, Board of Directors, Financial Industrial

Fund, Inc. and Financial Industrial Income Fund, Inc.,
Denver, Colorado.

Mr. Hinckley has served his government with distinc-
tion, holding such important positions as assistant admin-
istrator of W.P.A.; chairman of Civil Aeronautics Auth-
ority; Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Air; director
of contract settlement; and member of War Production
Board, Public Advisory Board of Economic Cooperation
Administration, and Advisory Council to National Institutes
on Arthritis and Metabolic Diseases, National Institutes of
Health.

Among the accomplishments of the Civil Aeronautics
Authority during his period of service was an unsurpassed
safety record — seventeen accident-free months to passen-
gers, crews, and bystanders — establishment of the civil pi-
lot training program, which initiated pilot training in six
hundred universities and colleges, and building of the
Washington National Airport. Under his direction the Of-
fice of Contract Settlement was accorded high praise from
Mr. Bernard Baruch for settlement of all terminated war
contracts. Mr. Baruch said, "This was the greatest, smooth-
est, and most efficient job done by any governmental
agency."

The Edwin Smith Hinckley Scholarship Fund at Brig-
ham Young University has been and will be the means of
assisting many students to obtain their education. This scho-
larship fund is a tribute to the faith in education and the
generosity displayed by members of the Hinckley family
and the Edward J. Noble Foundation, of which Mr.
Hinckley is a trustee.

Mr. President, for his accomplishments in the world
of business and the field of communication, for his out-
standing contributions in the service of his country, for his
unstinting support of the cause of education, and for de-
votion to the welfare of his fellowmen I recommend that
Robert H. Hinckley be awarded the degree of Doctor of
Laws, honoris causa.

AWARDS FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE

G. STANLEY McALLISTER

JESSE KNIGHT INDUSTRIAL CITIZENSHIP AWARD

The Jesse Knight Industrial Citizenship Award is
being presented to a dynamic leader in the field of bus-
iness: G. Stanley McAllister.

He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he ob-
tained his early education and attended the University of
Utah for two years before receiving a mission call to the
Eastern States. He later attended Georgetown University
and New York University. He is married and the father
of four children.

For eighteen years he was director of buildings and
plant operations for Columbia Broadcasting System. In
1946 he became a vice-president and operating manager of
Lord & Taylor in New York. Three years later he was
appointed vice-president of operations and research for
Associated Dry Goods Corporation, the parent company
of Lord & Taylor and several other large department
stores throughout the country.

He has a sincere interest in education and in young
people, having served as president of the Board of Edu-

cation in Scarsdale, NY., as a charter member and director
of the New York Citizens Committee on Public Schools,
as a member of the White House Advisory Council on
Education, and as a member of the Manhattan District
Council of Boy Scouts of America in New York City.

Although G. Stanley McAllister is not a graduate of
B.Y.U., he has a great love for this institution which may
result, in part, from the fact that he is a grandson of Karl
G. Maeser. His interest in B.Y.U. is reflected in his
valuable assistance in procuring the Mahonri Young Art
Collection, which will be placed in the new Franklin S.
Harris Fine Arts Center.

He has held many important positions in the Church,
and is now the president of New York Stake. He also
serves as a member of the 1964 World's Fair Committee
for the Mormon Pavilion.

It is most fitting that G. Stanley McAllister receive
the Jesse Knight Industrial Citizenship Award for 1964.

WAYNE BROCKBANK HALES

KARL G. MAESER DISTINGUISHED TEACHING AWARD

Wayne B. Hales was born December 20, 1893, in
Spanish Fork, Utah, the son of Jonathan Hyrum Hales
and Martha Ann Brockbank. Three universities granted
him degrees in physics: Brigham Young University, his
B.A. degree (1916); University of Utah, his M.A. degree
(1923); and California Institute of Technology, the Ph.D.
degree (1926).

A well-qualified teacher, he served twelve years at
Ricks College, Snow College (as President) and Weber
College. For thirty-four years he has taught at Brigham
Young University, four years as physics department chair-
man and five years as dean of General College.

The lasting impression he has made on students marks
him as a master teacher. Teachers of long experience and
others with distinguished careers gratefully acknowledge
him as teacher and friend whose influence has lasted many
years. His inner glow radiates to others, who readily
sense his genuine interest, sympathy, and understanding
of problems.

The classroom is but one place where his influence has
touched the lives of others. At home he has inspired
six children to great accomplishment with the help of his
now deceased wife, Belle Wilson, whom he married in
1916. As counselor to students, he has readily responded
to their needs. As bishop and stake president, he has in-
spired thousands by his enduring faith in God. A holder
of the Silver Beaver Award, he has served fifty years in
scouting.

His professional career includes activities in the Utah
Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters, Utah Conference
on Higher Education, American Association for the Ad-
vancement of Sciences, Sigma Xi National Research Society,
and numerous other scientific societies.

His devotion to duty, his quiet efficiency and his
confidence that others will do their part have brought their
response; thus his influence has been extended. He is
amply worthy to receive the Karl G. Maeser Distinguished
Teaching Award.

LEROY R. AND ANN WOODBURY HAFEN

DAVID O. McKAY HUMANITIES AWARD

Because they have accomplished so much as a husband-
and-wife team and because as scholars they have con-
tributed so unselfishly to the world, we heartily present
LeRoy R. and Ann Woodbury Hafen, together, as worthy
recipients of the David O. McKay Humanities Award.
Although not without labor, success came to these two
worthy descendants of pioneer "Mormon" stock, fittingly,
in the literary documentation of the westward movement.

Their preparation was in the schools of Utah and Cal-
ifornia. Their first assignment upon the completion of
formal schooling was in Denver, Colorado. For some
thirty years hardly a day elapsed that did not see western
history touch their lives. Colorado history became, and
Utah history continued to be, abiding interests, not as
isolated units but each as contributing factors in the
development of the main themes of western history.

Together they made a home for a son and daughter,
and together their literary efforts continued. As a team
they researched and recorded the history of Colorado and

edited the fifteen-volume Far West and Rockies Series.
Together they received the Distinguished Service Award
of the B.Y.U. Alumni Association and the Award of
Merit of the American Association for State and Local
History.

Although Ann Hafen has been a leader in poetry and
other literary societies, both in Utah and Colorado, and
has edited anthologies and received awards, both locally
and nationally, in recognition of her literary achievements;
and Dr. Hafen has been awarded the Honorary Litt.D.
by the University of Colorado, received the Denver Cen-
tennial Distinguished Citizenship Award and National
Honorary Membership in Phi Alpha Theta in recognition
of his contributions to the field of history, they have
tended to achieve as a team. Whether it has been to pro-
vide a home and rear a family or to write the history and
literature of Western America, they have undertaken their
life's work together, Dr. LeRoy R. Hafen, Historian, and
and Ann Woodbury Hafen, Literary Artist.

CLAWSON YOUNG AND WINNIFRED MORRELL CANNON

JOSEPH F. SMITH FAMILY LIVING AWARD

It is fitting that the Joseph F. Smith Family Living
Award be given jointly to Clawson Young and Winnifred
Morrell Cannon, for they have worked as an inspiring team
for fifty years, creating an exemplary home, rearing a
devoted and responsible family, contributing to their com-
munity, and serving the Lord.

From the time, soon after their marriage, when they
moved to Snyderville, Utah, to settle down to farm life,
through the precious teaching career that lured them away,
the rearing and educating of their children, the gaining
for Clawson of a higher education, the establishing and
inspiring of new branches of the church out in the mis-
sion field, they have worked hand in hand, each encourag-
ing and sustaining the other, yet always giving of them-
selves unselfishly wherever needed.

Together they have welcomed hundreds, probably thou-
sands, of guests into their home— travelers, students, mis-
sionaries, servicemen, educators— sharing their rich hos-
pitality and spirit.

Especially notable were their twenty-one years in Ames,
Iowa, where Dr. Cannon was held of the Dairy Hus-
bandry Department. During these years they guarded and
guided, encouraged and counseled L.D.S. students who
were away from home. Through the Cannons the love
and affection in the small branch spread through its mem-
bers to many wards and remote branches of the church.

In the Cannon home, young student wives could see
the example of good management, refinement, love, and
the practical homemaking arts of cooking, sewing and
good housekeeping. In addition they invariably left Ames
armed with recipes, patterns and Sister Cannon's wise
counsel. Many young husbands learned from Dr. Cannon
the thoughtfulness and tenderness for a wife so necessary
to a happy marriage.

To their three sons and their wives, their daughter and
her husband and their fourteen grandchildren they are an
inspiration, radiating the sweet influence characteristic of
their fifty golden years of marriage.

SIGNIFICANCE OF ACADEMIC COSTUME

The significance of academic costume is determined especially by the sleeves and
hoods. DOCTORS wear the round bell sleeve; the gown is faced down the front and
barred on the sleeves with black velvet or color indicating the degree; the doctor's hood
is large. The doctor may, if he so choose, wear the gold tassel on his cap. MASTERS
wear the long, closed sleeve, with a slit near the upper part of the arm; the master's
hood is of more moderate size. BACHELORS wear the long or pointed sleeve. The
color of the tassel indicates whether the degree is in the field of arts (white) or science
(golden-yellow).

Hoods are lined with the colors of the institutions granting the degree, or with
which the wearer is connected, and are trimmed with velvet of the color distinctive
of the degree — for example, humanities and social science, white; philosophy, blue;
science, golden-yellow; music, pink; engineering, orange; education, light blue; com-
merce and accounting, drab.

THE COLLEGE SONG

All hail the College that we love,

At the throne, the throne of wisdom's sway;

O let us lift our songs above,

The thronging multitude today.

No pride nor riches here may sue;

The head, the heart, the hand,

United must be true,

Be true to thee our white and blue,

When they join our happy band.

Then cheer anew for the B.Y.U.;

We've come to work, to live, to do.

We'll raise our standard, bear it through;

Our hearts are true to the B.Y.U.

Hoods are lined with the colors of the institutions granting the degree, or with
which the wearer is connected, and are trimmed with velvet of the color distinctive
of the degree — for example, humanities and social science, white; philosophy, blue;
science, golden-yellow; music, pink; engineering, orange; education, light blue; com-
merce and accounting, drab.

THE COLLEGE SONG

All hail the College that we love,

At the throne, the throne of wisdom's sway;

O let us lift our songs above,

The thronging multitude today.

No pride nor riches here may sue;

The head, the heart, the hand,

United must be true,

Be true to thee our white and blue,

When they join our happy band.

Then cheer anew for the B.Y.U.;

We've come to work, to live, to do.

We'll raise our standard, bear it through;

Our hearts are true to the B.Y.U.
